Food Bank of Reno County - Hutchinson, Kansas

This is my second post on this issue. Something needs to happen with this particular business. One year ago I posted a review on the Reno county food bank. There supposed to be an emergency food center. Their policy states that you need to call and schedule an appointment from 8:30 am till their slots fill up. Now a year ago I literally called their phone 105 times in a period of just a few min, left my name number and reason for calling. They never got back to me. Today I called again left my name and info requesting an appointment… never got back to me. So I went up there rang their little door bell. Lady comes out, tells me they’re full and that I need to call. I told the lady I did at 8:30 and I left my info. She then tells me that the person who does the calls has been busy all morning…. I just looked at her and was like why do you even tell people to call if you’re not going to answer? I got no response . Let me just say I work at the food bank in Wichita and not one person ever went hungry. Even people who didn’t make an appointment always got their food, we never let someone go hungry. Not only did I work for the food bank but I also delivered food to people who couldn’t make it down there. All of Reno county food bank gets their food from Wichita and they bring lots of it. So what I’m trying to say is is that these people were doing nothing when I went up there, they were just talking to each other…. Must of been super busy to deny starving people? There needs to be an audit on this business. Something needs to be done about it. Idk how but I hope that they get shut down. Some people just don’t realize how this can affect families, especially people who truly, genuinely need the help. Lazy, hypocritical people. As long as they get paid it’s all cool for them.

If i could put zero stars I would and I almost NEVER make bad reviews on any business but this is absolutely ridiculous! For an EMERGENCY food place they definitely don't care to answer their phones much at all if ever and when they do they are almost always full for the day. I have called as early as 8:30 am and kept calling until I finally got through at 9:45 am and they were already full! I told the lady that I had been calling since 8:30 am and online states that they make appointments until 11 a.m. The lady didn't seem apologetic and simply told me to call back the next day. I told her the reason for my calling that day is because, it's the only day that I can come in because, I work. There NEEDS to be a better way to get people through for appointments!! This is unacceptable!!

I'm so dissapointed in the way they have you make appointments now. I've tried to get an appointment for the last month. I call back to back and NEVER get through. I always get a recording. Once there full for that day you have to start all over the next day at 830am.

It's great that something like this exists for the area but the way its ran has GOT to change. When we went last month (April 2023) out of the whole load we got, only a few things were "safe" to eat and even then they were still expired or expired day of. I understand that when meat is frozen it stays good for longer but you cant just hand out meat that *might* have been frozen before you got it when it expired a month or longer ago.

Also included, we got buffalo sauce which we were excited for, that when we got home and read the label found expired in 2021!! Somebody took that home, cooked with it and either contracted some disease or was on the toilet for the next few days. The sad thing is, most of what we got ended up in the garbage because the meat was discolored, the drinks that were also expired tasted off, etc. It created a ton of waste more than anything and I hate wasting food. It is not okay to be giving people food like this, so everybody that sees this take it as a warning and make sure you check what they give you before you need to take an expensive trip to the hospital

It was ridiculous, Standing inline while ppl argue about who's next inline to get a gift card . I think there needs to be a better strategy because ppl were cutting ..Ppl tables who handed out the cards were letting ppl sign up late or pick other ppl cards , I was like wtheck ..So to be honest that could of went really bad .

Had a bit if a crisis and just need a couple things to get us by. The meat was old, the bread was hard, the boxes of dried goods we're smashed. I wouldn't go here again even for emergencies, the staff was nice, the food was not all edible and much of it had to get thrown out

They're really helpful when you are in a desperate situation and very courteous to you at least they were with me good people
